Five ways to improve the exterior of your house

We’re often so busy worrying about what the inside of our house looks like that we forget about the exterior. Even though we might not see the outside as much as we do the inside, the curb appeal of your property is still important, especially if you’re looking to sell.

If you’re looking for some great ways to improve the exterior of your house, below are five simple ways to do exactly this.

Plants and flowers

Even if you don’t have much space at the front of your property, plants and flowers are a fantastic way to improve the look of your home. They add colour, they’re inviting, they’re easy to look after and it’s a quick and easy way of making simple yet effective changes.

If you feel like the new additions to your garden still aren’t quite enough, why not opt for some outdoor art? Birdbaths, metal cut-outs, sculptures, fountains and wind chimes are all guaranteed to attract attention and help your property achieve that all-important wow factor.

Tidy up the front door

Your front door can be one of the main focal points of your house and it’s one of the first things people will see when they visit. Wipe down any dust or debris, use metal polish around the fixtures and you can even give your door a fresh lick of paint if it’s looking a bit worn. If you want to make your home even more welcoming, a wreath often makes a nice touch.

Also think about replacing house numbers, door handles, the letterbox and adding an overhead light fixture. These are all small and simple changes but when done in conjunction with each other, can really make a big difference.

Window shutters

If you really want to improve the curb appeal of your home, why not invest in window shutters? Not only will you be the envy of all your neighbours because they really do look fantastic, window shutters offer a number of other benefits including increased security and privacy and better insulation.

While shutters may initially seem like a big expense, in the long-run they can reduce your costs and increase the value of your property.

Install window boxes

If you think that the outside of your home looks dull or doesn’t stand out, window boxes are a great way of rectifying this. They offer a quick and easy way of adding colour to your home and they can be changed according to the season or your personal preference at the time.

Replace gutters and downspouts

If your home has an old or inefficient gutter system, chances are that the outside of your property is prone to peeling paint, rust spots and other water-related issues. Replacing old systems with newer and more modern gutters not only improves the overall look of your home, it can also save you on costly and time-consuming repairs.

The good news is that you can usually fix or repair your own guttering without the need to hire someone to do it for you. Remember however that safety should be your first concern and ideally, gutter work should be carried out from fixed scaffolding.
