Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017!

With Christmas and New Year celebrations becoming a dim and distant blur of over indulgence, wrapping paper and party poppers, we thought we’d reflect on the design trends we saw introduced in 2016 and take a quick look at what we may see coming in for 2017.

Colours

The buzz word in 2016 was ‘new neutrals’. A definite step was made away from the classic’s such as taupe. New neutrals were introduced instead such as grey, silver and pale blue. Even the classic black and white scheme was given a shake up with the introduction of these new neutrals. With the versatility of adding tones from light to dark, these new-found colours have added style and elegance that will hold their own over the next few years.

Family time

We are all living within the ever-changing world of new technology. Our homes have become overrun with gadgets, TV’s, electronic games, tablets, and laptops to name just a few! But last year saw families bringing back traditional family spaces, so that quality family time could be embraced alongside living in a technical era. Formal dining rooms have been reintroduced rather than using these spaces as home offices or games rooms, in a bid to bring back family time such as sit-down family meal times. Living rooms have been de-cluttered of gadgets and techy items to create a relaxing environment where the family can gather and relax together.

Materials

2016 saw a big move away from metallic items. The market instead saw the introduction of oxidised metals, matte glazes, and chalk finished paints. Marble came under debate, with some designers believing that this timeless classic had had its day but others were not convinced. Rustic wood, faux fur and raffia all had hits in the headlines which added texture both on the exterior of our homes and inside, adding an air of luxuriousness to rooms that have in recent times become very minimalistic.

So what does this mean for 2017?

Well predictions so far are suggesting that a move back to basics, with the introduction of earthy, darker, neutral tones such as dark green and materials such as cork being introduced. Sustainability is becoming an ever more present subject and designers are using materials such as wood, stone and marble in their raw state, which will introduce a relaxed ambience into our homes.

The word on the ground for colour is for a Mediterranean vibe to hit our homes but not as we have known it in the past. Out with the glossy terracotta that we saw widely in the 80/90’s and in with rustic, natural tones both on the outside and inside of our homes.
