How to make your house look great in the New Year
The New Year is often a time when we start to think about how we can improve various aspects of our lives. Whether it’s joining the gym, cutting out junk food, looking for a new job or getting around to those DIY jobs once and for all, January is always full of good intentions.
If you’re planning on giving your house some attention in 2017, below are some fantastic ways you can transform your property into your dream home.
We often don’t realise it, but flooring plays a huge part in the overall look of our homes. If your carpets are old and worn, now is the perfect time to replace them. Try to stick to light, neutral colours as this will really brighten the place up and make it look bigger. If you have wooden floorboards, replace any loose ones and consider waxing them to give them a new lease of life.
Again, windows often get neglected but it’s one of the first things you see when you look at a house. If you have wooden frames which have seen better days, sand them down and re-paint them. This will brighten up your windows and make them look more modern.
If you don’t have double glazing already, it’s well worth considering making this investment. Aside from keeping your house much warmer and reducing your energy bills, double glazing is a big plus if you ever decide to put your house on the market.
Finally, think about your window dressings. Window shutters for example look stunning in any home. As well as adding elegance to your property, they also keep the place warm, give you added privacy, reduce outside noise, increase security and can even raise the value of your house.
Never underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint. Relatively quick and inexpensive to carry out, re-painting your walls can make a huge difference. If you’re trying to brighten the place up, a neutral colour will do exactly this or if you’re looking for a bit of a change, a bold colour on a feature wall can help you feel excited about your property once again. Add an extension
Not having enough space is one of the most common reasons why people move house. If moving isn’t feasible or you really love your existing house minus the space concerns, an extension can solve all your problems.
If your loft space isn’t being used, a conversion can add an extra bedroom and bathroom or a home office. A survey carried out by Nationwide Building Society this year found that a loft conversion can add an impressive 20% to the value of your house.
There are also a number of other ways you can add space to your home:
- Conservatory – added living space can really increase your quality of living and this is something that will be particularly appealing to buyers if you ever decide to sell your house.
- Garden office – with more of us working from home than ever before, garden offices are becoming increasingly popular. These areas provide home-workers with somewhere to go, free from distractions and as they’re still relatively uncommon, if you sell your house at some point it will help you stand out from the competition.
- Build upwards – if you don’t have the square footage to extend into the garden, building upwards is a fantastic solution. As space becomes more of an issue in the UK, town houses are growing in popularity because they allow you to have a decent number of rooms split over three levels instead of one or two.
