Keeping your clothing smelling fresh (and moth free) naturally!

Cedar Blocks - moth protection

It is that time of year again, the windows are still open, just a crack (behind their beautiful solid shutters, of course) and the moths are looking for somewhere to hide – just as our woollens come out of hiding!

Shop bought moth balls stink to high heaven. They also contain harmful chemicals such as paradichlorobenzene or naphthalene which are very dangerous to both pets and children. However there are natural alternatives which will keep your clothes fresh and moth-free without smelling like the grandmas of old!

For those who are lucky to have the funds, cedar coat hangers are definitely the way to go, however, to minimize the expense you can use normal hangers and hang little sachets of cedar balls onto them – which works just as well. You can find various types at Lakeland. The only down side of cedar is that it loses its scent and therefore it’s repellent aspect over time. But you can bring them back to life by simply purchasing a bottle of cedar oil, and applying a few drops to the sachets. Make sure you let them dry before rehanging by your clothes though as the oil can cause staining.

Some people view Cedar to be a bit of a masculine scent – although preferable to the chemical moth balls. However, the good news is that there are a number of alternatives you could use instead and not only are they great moth repellents they are also great clothes fresheners as well.

You can buy readymade sachets or you can get creative and make some yourself as they are terribly easy to do. I confess, I cheat and use muslin favour bags for mine (visit www.notonthehighstreet.com where they sell them in packs of 10 for £6.95) and if you’re feeling inspired you can even try mixing some of the scents and spices to create some great new aromas of your choice.

Lavender and Cedar Moth Repelling Clothes Fresheners

Once you have your bags fill them as follows:

Bulk up the bags with cedar chips or wood shavings from the pet store.

  • Add Lavender (fresh dried lavender seeds look best and last longer, but a few drops of lavender oil will also work).
  • Add in a little dried rosemary / thyme / mint / cloves (to taste)
  • Tie the bag tight and then dangle it around any old hanger.

Hey presto! You have your own, homemade moth repelling clothes freshener.
