Continuing on our theme of interior design trends for 2015, illumination is a key component. Lighting design can be much more creative than most people ever imagined, and this has never been more evident than now.
In the past few years, finding decent lights has been a bit of a struggle, with most of the high street shops offering little by way of inspiration. All that is about to change. Stores like Debenhams have extended their range of lighting options to a significant extent.
Below are 6 major lighting trends to look out for in 2015 and beyond:
Chandeliers are back in a big way. Bold and glamourous or cutting edge contemporary styles are very much in vogue and there is a huge market in mini wall mounted styles to match the central feature. These are going to be very evident in bedroom designs, and kitchens as well as in more traditional settings like the lounge and dining rooms. There is a focus on colour too, with black glass chandeliers being very popular.
2. LED lighting outside.
LED lighting will remain as one of the top trends for 2015 in kitchens and bathrooms – which is hardly new, or surprising. Yet there is more significant interest in outdoor LED lighting. As consumers embrace the trend towards outdoor living, many are revamping their patios, porches, driveways and garden areas with additional lighting. Do be warned, some of the lights may look beautiful but it would take an octopus with a degree in engineering to change the bulbs so do try before you buy!
3. Pendant Power
For those who love the idea of a chandelier but the cost of changing lights every few years can seem excessive, then pendant lighting is the way to go. There are a wide variety of chandelier shades on offer, which may seem ideal and on-trend, however be very careful as some of these demand very low voltage lights. The other pendant trend is for multi-lighting pendants – where 3-7 different lengths of cascade from a central fixture.
4. Nook, Cabinet and Drawer LEDs
Once upon a time, the only item with an automatic internal light was the fridge, now it seems that you can’t open a cabinet or drawer without an LED light flicking into life. I can certainly see the benefit in some cases, yet it seems a little excessive to illuminate every corner of your life, even with the mini drop in energy prices. Yet it is a current trend so deserves its place on the list.
5.Copper – the new now colour
Along with the autumnal tones, copper has surged as the “must have” accent item. From copper baths (mentioned last week) to table trimmings, everything is being decorated with the gleaming delight of a copper hue. Many of the more upmarket shops are beginning to stock a variety of lovely copper-coloured pendant lights and lamps as this trend looks set to stay with us for a little while at least.
6. Smart Homes – Apps which control everything from heating to lighting.
Companies like Leviton are filling vast spaces at interior design shows in 2015. They have exciting and on-trend systems which monitor and control everything from your tablet. If you are out, on holiday or just want the lights switched on just before you turn into your driveway, these systems are proving very popular. If you are doing a major renovation project, it could be wise to incorporate these systems into your design.
