The top 10 interior decorating trends for 2018

It’s hard to believe that 2018 is nearly over but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to catch up on the latest interior design trends. From the return of black and bringing mother nature indoors to timeless shutters and statement ceilings, below we share our top 10 interior decorating trends for 2018.

Black is back

shutterstock_234642958When it comes to decorating our homes, most of us will avoid black like the plague. After all, the darker the colour, the smaller a room looks and what’s more, who wants a dark and dingy room?

However, when used in the right way, black can be very striking. A black feature wall can for example create a powerful yet elegant statement and black furniture, fixtures, prints and finishes can help statement pieces stand out.

If you’re worried about size, pair black with light colours because the contrast will actually help to further enhance the overall size and appearance of the space you have available.

Statement ceilings

Who would have thought your ceiling could be used to create a design statement? A growing trend for 2018 is to keep walls one colour and then wallpaper, tile, decorate or paint the ceiling to make it the standout feature for the room. Bringing nature indoors

Unsurprisingly, this year’s interior design trends are taking a more environmentally-friendly approach. As a result, it’s becoming increasingly common to see plenty of natural, warm elements combined with earthen luxury.

From materials that are obtained from nature to those that mimic the look and feel of it, when it comes to this trend, anything goes. Try throwing in natural wood, granite, pebbles, marble and plants to create an earthy feel to your home.

Wallpaper may have fallen out of favour years ago but as with most trends, it’s officially back in fashion. Landscape scenery, abstract shapes and colourful geometric patterns can really help to add an interesting twist to uninspiring living spaces.

Window shutters

Year after year, window shutters manage to retain their spot in top 10 lists of interior design trends. With so many benefits of these window dressings, it’s easy to see why this is:

  • They’re simple yet elegant which means that they’re timeless and will look great in any home
  • They’re made from high quality wood and are therefore incredibly long-lasting
  • You can control how much light enters your property by adjusting the slats
  • They offer increased security and privacy
  • They help to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter
  • They’re child and pet friendly
  • Waterproof options are available which means they can even be used in kitchens and bathrooms

Personalised spaces

By adding a personal touch to your space, you can leave a mark on your home’s interior design as well as customise it to your lifestyle. Infusing your own character and personality throughout also creates a unique style that no other home will have.

Oversized florals

Fitting in with the nature theme, oversized florals are tipped to be hugely popular this autumn. Think wall murals, cushions and bedding and remember to keep the rest of the room simple so that the florals become the centrepiece.

Unless you remember the 70s you’re unlikely to have heard of terrazzo. Like wallpaper however, it has started to make a big comeback this year.

These colourful floor tiles create a beautiful edge to any room and much more affordable options have started to appear on the market which is no doubt contributing to its growth in popularity.

More industrial shades of metal have become a popular choice in 2018. The likes of brass and nickel which aren’t as shiny as other metallics will add a more natural look to your home.

Most of us tend to opt for the minimalist look but the braver among you will be pleased to know that maximalism is our final trend for 2018. Think clashing prints, bright colours and attention-grabbing accessories – the bolder the better.
